This policy explains what information Penny o' Pocket UK (uk.pennyopocket.com, “we”, “us”) collects when you use the site, how we use it, who we share it with and the rights you have under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). Penny o' Pocket UK is an independent website run by an individual. Its operator is the controller of the information described here (the one responsible for it under that law) and can be contacted at hello@pennyopocket.com. Penny o' Pocket UK has no accounts: you can use the whole site without signing up or telling us who you are.
1. Information we collect
Site analytics
Penny o' Pocket UK measures how the site is used with its own analytics, not with a third-party analytics or advertising service. When you open a page, your browser sends us:
- A random visitor ID and visit ID that your browser keeps in local storage (under the name “pp_nav”), and a random ID for the browser tab in session storage. These IDs aren’t linked to your name, email address or any account.
- The page you view, its title and the web address, including campaign tags in the link (such as UTM parameters). Parameters that look like passwords, codes, tokens or contact details are removed before they leave your browser.
- The website you came from, if you arrived from another site, such as a search engine or an AI assistant.
- Your screen size, browser language, time zone, whether your device has a touch screen and your browser’s user agent, from which we derive the device type, operating system and browser.
- How long the page stays open on your screen and how far you scroll.
Our network provider tells us the approximate location of the visit (country and, when available, region and city) based on your IP address. We store that approximate location, not the IP address, with the analytics data. Browsers controlled by automation software don’t send analytics data.
Clicks to shops
When you click a button that takes you to a shop, such as “Get code” or “Get deal”, we record the click: the shop, the discount code or deal, the visitor ID, the time, the page you clicked from, where your visit came from (for example, a search engine), your browser’s user agent, whether the click looks automated and a one-way, keyed hash of your IP address. We don’t store the IP address itself in click records. We add a click ID to the link to the shop so the shop’s affiliate network can tell that the visit came from Penny o' Pocket UK.
Purchase reports
If you buy something after clicking through to a shop, the shop’s affiliate network may report the purchase to us: the shop’s order number, the order value, our commission, the date and the status of the commission, linked to the click ID. These reports don’t include your name, email address, postal address or payment details.
Emails you send us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you include in the message.
Server logs
Like most websites, the services that host Penny o' Pocket UK automatically log technical details of each request, such as the IP address, browser user agent, page requested and time, to keep the site running and secure. For known search engine and AI crawlers, we also record the crawler’s name, the page it requested and the network block of its IP address.
What we don’t collect
Penny o' Pocket UK doesn’t ask for your name, email address, phone number, address or payment details to use the site, and it doesn’t create profiles of individual people. We don’t collect special category data (such as information about your health, religion or ethnicity), and we don’t use the information above to make automated decisions about you.
2. Cookies and local storage
Penny o' Pocket UK doesn’t set cookies for analytics or advertising. The visitor ID, visit ID and tab ID described above are kept in your browser’s local storage and session storage, along with a short queue of analytics events that haven’t been delivered yet. You can delete them at any time by clearing your browser’s site data for uk.pennyopocket.com; a new random ID is created on your next visit. The only cookie the site sets is a sign-in cookie used by the site’s operator for the site’s admin area.
When you go to a shop from Penny o' Pocket UK, the shop and its affiliate network may set their own cookies to record that the visit came from Penny o' Pocket UK. Those cookies are governed by the shop’s and the network’s privacy policies.
3. How we use information, and our lawful basis
- To run the site, fix problems and keep it secure.
- To understand which pages, shops and sources of visits are useful, so we can improve the site.
- To confirm commissions with the shops’ affiliate networks.
- To detect automated traffic, abuse and fraud.
- To answer your emails.
- To comply with the law and protect our rights.
Under UK data protection law, we rely on our legitimate interests for these uses: running a free and secure site, understanding how it is used, being paid the commissions that keep it free, preventing abuse and answering the people who contact us. The analytics and click information we use is limited, isn’t linked to your name and isn’t used to build profiles of individual people. When the law requires us to keep or disclose information, we rely on that legal obligation. You can object to our use of your information at any time (see section 9).
4. How we share information
- Affiliate networks and shops. When you click through to a shop, the link carries a click ID, and the shop and its affiliate network receive the click ID and the information your browser normally sends to any website.
- Service providers. Companies that host the site and its database, deliver it over the network or handle email process information for us, only to provide those services.
- Legal reasons. We may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Penny o' Pocket UK, its visitors or others.
- A change of ownership. If Penny o' Pocket UK is transferred to a new owner, the information would go with it, still covered by this policy.
We don’t sell personal information, and we don’t use it or share it for targeted advertising (ads based on your activity on other websites).
5. Links to shops and other websites
Penny o' Pocket UK links to shop websites and to official pages that support each shop fact. When you leave Penny o' Pocket UK, the other website’s privacy policy applies. Any purchase, account, payment or delivery happens with the shop, under the shop’s own policies.
6. Affiliate relationships
Penny o' Pocket UK is free to use. When you shop through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Read the affiliate disclosure for details.
7. Where information is stored
The services that host Penny o' Pocket UK and its database are in the United States, so the information described in this policy is stored and processed there, outside the UK. We use providers whose terms include safeguards for personal data transferred from the UK. Email hello@pennyopocket.com for details of these safeguards.
8. How long we keep information
We keep analytics and click records for as long as they are useful for the purposes in section 3, including confirming commissions, which can take several months after a purchase. Emails are kept as long as needed to answer them and for our records. Server logs are kept by our hosting providers according to their own schedules.
9. Your rights
Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct it or delete it;
- ask us to restrict how we use it;
- object to our use of it, including for site analytics and click records; and
- complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator.
To make a request, email hello@pennyopocket.com with “Privacy request” in the subject line. Because Penny o' Pocket UK has no accounts and doesn’t know who you are, include details that help us find the information, such as the dates you visited, the shops you clicked or the visitor ID stored in your browser under “pp_nav”. We may ask for more details to confirm a request, and someone you authorise can make a request on your behalf. We’ll respond within one month. If a request is complex, we may need up to two more months, and we’ll tell you within the first month.
If you’re unhappy with how we handle your information, please tell us first at hello@pennyopocket.com. You can also complain to the ICO at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
10. Children’s privacy
Penny o' Pocket UK is not aimed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email hello@pennyopocket.com and we’ll delete it.
11. Security
We use appropriate measures to protect the information we keep, such as encrypted connections and storing a keyed hash of IP addresses in click records instead of the addresses themselves. No system is completely secure, so we can’t promise that information will never be accessed without permission.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll post the new version on this page and update the date at the top.
